Begin with awareness, not effort
Find a comfortable seated position and let your shoulders relax. Notice your natural breathing for a few moments without trying to change it. There is no need to take unusually large breaths or hold your breath.
Keep it comfortable
If it feels comfortable, let your breathing become a little slower and gentler. Breathe through your nose if that is comfortable for you, and avoid forcing a particular rhythm. A short, quiet pause can be enough; this is not a test of lung capacity.
Know when to stop
Stop if you feel dizzy, uncomfortable, or more short of breath, and return to your usual breathing. Breathing practices do not replace prescribed treatment. If you have a respiratory condition, ask your healthcare professional which exercises are appropriate for you.
Make room for a small pause
Try pairing a brief moment of awareness with an ordinary part of your day, such as sitting down after a walk. Some people find this relaxing, but experiences differ and it should never feel like a demand.
